Richard Atkinson was the pioneer in the development of Irish Poplin. In 1820 he converted a cottage industry into a factory base. This secured employment and much improved living and working conditions. Selling through his shop in College Green, Dublin he built a following for Atkinsons at home and abroad.He was recognised as a generous philanthropist and funded a refuge for widows. He served twice as Lord Mayor of Dublin and his portrait in full regalia hangs proudly in the Atkinsons boardroom.
