When the Huguenots brought their silk weaving craft to Ireland in the 1600s, they introduced a high quality local wool to their silk warps thus creating Irish Poplin. The name Poplin itself is derived from the French "Papelin" or "Lin du Pape", a pure silk cloth used in robes when there was a papal seat in Avignon, France.
